This past weekend over 800 Muay Thai Athletes converged on the town of Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the largest and most prestigious Muay Thai Tournament in America the TBA Classic Muay Thai World Expo.
One local Arizona athlete Diego Avila who trains out of Sentosa Martial Arts in Avondale was one of the athletes to compete and WIN!!!
Diego has been training Muay Thai for a few years and has been training seriously to compete for this tournament for the past 16 weeks, around 20 hours a week.
His daily training consists of running, jump rope, sprinting, calisthenics, drilling, sparring, clinching, bag work and pad work everyday….6 days a week.
Along, with being a highly disciplined athlete he is also an honor roll student in school.
Diegos first fight was a against a tough fighter from Illinois. Diego used his punches, front kicks and roundhouse kicks to keep his opponent out of range and when his opponent rushed in he used his devastating knees in the clinch.
He won the first fight by a unanimous decision.
In the final, Diego fought a kid from Texas. Diegos knees were to much for the kid to handle.
Diego won the final match by way of a TKO with a knee to the ribs/stomach area within 40 seconds of the first round.
Diego WON the belt for the 117 pound, 14-15 year old novice division.
